For the Sloppy Joes
  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey
For Serving
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 2 green onions sliced

Method
 

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add diced onion and green bell pepper. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground chicken and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
  5. Sprinkle in Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir well to coat the chicken evenly.
  6. Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and honey. Stir until combined.
  7. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 to 7 minutes until thickened and saucy.
  8. Toast the hamburger buns if desired.
  9. Spoon the Cajun chicken mixture onto the buns and garnish with sliced green onions before serving. For food safety, cook ground chicken to an internal temperature of 165°F as measured with a food thermometer.

Notes

For extra heat, add a few dashes of hot sauce to the sloppy joe mixture while it simmers.
